The Underlying Reality of the Archon Rulers
The Hypostasis (an underlying reality or substance) of the Archons or The Reality of the Rulers. Exegesis on the Book of Genesis 1–6. It expresses Gnostic mythology of the divine creators of the cosmos and humanity.
The texts were located in The Nag Hammadi Library, in CG II, in 1945, dated in the third century CE. It originated from a transitional period in Gnosticism, converting from a purely mythological state into a philosophical phase.
The beginning and conclusion of the document are Christian Gnostic. The rest of the material is a mythological narrative regarding the origin and nature of the Archon powers. They are peopling the heavens between Earth and the Ogdoad. However, it also explains how man’s destiny is affected by this primaeval incident. The work presented a learned treatise in which a teacher addresses a topic suggested by the work’s dedicatee.
The treatise begins with a fragment of cosmogony, which leads to a revision of “true history,” the events in the Genesis creation story. Reflecting Gnostic distrust of the material world and the demiurge that created it. Within this narrative, there is an “angelic revelation dialogue.” An angel repeats and elaborates the author’s fragment of cosmogonic myth in a much broader scope. It is concluded with the historical prediction of the coming of the saviour and the end of days.
The mysterious Archons are of great interest; however, archons are in Gnosticism and religion, closely related to it; a demonic entity subordinate to evil’s embodiment in the corresponding belief system. Among the Archontics, Ophites, Sethians, and the Nag Hammadi library’s writings, the Archons are rulers, each related to one of seven planets; they prevent the souls from leaving the material realm. In Manichaeism, the Archons rule a realm within the Kingdom of Darkness, who together make up the Prince of Darkness.
